In the Stomach of the Beast
Now...
The Stones fell jingling from the cloth bag onto the table, scattering all over the furniture. Some had a very noticeable greenish fluorescent glow, others had a rather discreet glow, difficult to distinguish in the light; but the vast majority were dull, indistinguishable from simple rocks, even if they were the fragments of the Mythic Master Emerald.
Around the table stood Sonic and the rest, watching the stones with interest and a bit of concern. They were inside Jet's office, who had (reluctantly) allowed them to plan their next move "privately", as long as he was present. The hawk wouldn't leave his huge desk, and although he feigned disinterest, he had his ear well prepared to listen to whatever the "intruders" had to say.
"One, two, three...," Amy counted the fragments. "Isn't that all of them?"
"That's all of them," the echidna replied.
"And why don't they magically come together like they used to?", Sonic asked.
"They don't have a fraction of the power they naturally possess," Knuckles picked up one of the dull fragments. "Even being in my hand, I can barely perceive their power. The ones that still have some power were the ones I was able to get my hands on first, because they were relatively easy to find. The later ones, however, took me years to locate."
"We had to rely on hearsay to know where to look," Sticks added. "The "Shinny-Things-Detector" Knux has in his head always directed him either to the North, where Acorn is, or to clandestine mines of that Meta-trash."
"Hmm, it's just as Wave deduced," Jet commented from his desk. "All the Chaos energy has been concentrated there."
"So what do you plan to do?" questioned Amy to Knuckles. "Do you have plans to enter the Acorn Kingdom?".
"Not really...," the echidna confessed as he took a seat on the couch behind him. The others mimicked him. "Not with the original Freedom Fighters over there."
"Are you afraid of the FF, big bro?" asked Sonic with a sardonic half-smile.
"I'm not afraid of anything," the echidna's tone and look were capable of killing.
"What about ghosts?" asked Amy and Sticks almost at the same time.
"Ghosts don't exist... So they don't count," Knux stirred a bit uncomfortably and tried to hide the slight shame he felt. "I have respect for the power of the FF, not only from what we've heard in our travels, but from experience. I'm sure you two know best what I'm talking about."
"Oh, no doubt," Sonic conceded. "There are dogs that no matter how much they bark, they don't bite. The FF don't even bark, but when they bite, they'll chew your arm off."
"Don't get me wrong. I'd be perfectly capable of taking on one or two of them. But not all of them at the same time..."
"And even less so if Shads and Acorn intervene..."
"Hey, I understand Shadow. But is Sally really that dangerous?"
"Yes," Sonic and Amy replied categorically. It wasn't sarcasm or hyperbole, both hedgehogs were speaking as seriously as they could afford, which made both Sticks and Knuckles a little uncomfortable.
"But the good thing is that we're reunited again," Sonic tried to bring optimism back into the mood. "You won't have to kick ass alone anymore."
"Indeed. Though we're still outnumbered anyway. Unless...," Knuckles looked up at Jet.
"Don't even think about it," the hawk didn't even bother to turn to look at them. "I don't intend to get me and my boys into an open war against Acorn. You'll have to fend for yourselves."
"Still...," Amy interjected, thoughtfully. "Is fighting really the only alternative we have?".
Everyone stared at Amy as if she had said something strange. Sonic sighed and looked away.
"What are you talking about?" questioned Knuckles.
"It's just... I feel like we're taking the hard mode just because. Why do we have to invade and fight each other when we could just... talk?".
Jet let out a loud laugh.
"Talk to the FF? The same people who are capable of slaughtering handfuls of hungry and thirsty people to steal what little food and water they have? I knew you were an idiot, but I had no idea you had such a spoiled brain."
"Watch your tongue, Jet," the words came out of Sonic's mouth with coldness.
"Are you going to threaten me in MY house, blue rat?"
"It's not a threat, it's a warning."
"Well, you can shove your warning up your-!"
"Yeah, but...," Sticks interrupted Jet. "... The dodo bird is right, pink."
"D-dodo?!"
"Where we were going...", Sticks ignored the hawk completely. "...All we've heard have been horror stories about the FF. They're just not open to talking, it's all or nothing with them.".
"That's what I still don't understand. They're not like that, Sally's not like that. She would never send her forces to rip food out of hungry people's mouths. Something just doesn't add up. Maybe..."
"Are you going to keep harping on about it being someone else pulling the strings, Ames?" exasperated Sonic blurted out. "We've been over this a million times: Sally is their Queen. They wouldn't do anything but on her direct orders. No one is manipulating her, no one is controlling her, period."
"Did you forget that Infinite came back, 7 years ago?".
"Yes, I remember that he came back. I also remember that 7 years ago Surge tore him to pieces along with Angel Island in The Union."
"Come ooon, you don't believe that one bit. The Phantom Ruby? The illusions? Huh?"
"I do believe that if infinite were still hanging around, things would be "Infinitely" worse."
"Oh So it's easier to believe that our friends became fascists just like that out of nowhere?"
"Times change people, Ames. And being frank, I'm not the least bit surprised on Shads' part..."
Amy slammed a loud bang against the table, the Master Emerald shards rattled, everyone but Sonic startled.
"You know damn well Shadow isn't like that! Not Shadow, not Sally, not anyone!"
"I know very well what the Faker is capable of**,** more than you even… And I also know a thing or two about Acorn that even you don't know, Amy"
"You-!"
"Will you two shut the hell up!" interrupted Knuckles abruptly, his voice echoing and reverberating through the room.
Silence fell. Both hedgehogs wouldn't look away from each other. Amy, leaning with her hands on the table, was trembling slightly, while Sonic remained leaning back on the couch, seemingly calm, but his foot was shaking impatiently. Knuckles sighed and got up from his seat, he looked at the two hedgehogs directly until they got the message and relaxed a little, looking away.
"I haven't seen the two of you for literally years. The last thing I imagined upon meeting you again is seeing you arguing over stupid things," the echidna moved to the center of the room, between Sonic and Amy. "I don't know Acorn as well as either of you, I'll admit that. But I know what I've seen, we can't be so naive...", he turned his gaze to Amy. "...nor so fatalistic", he turned to look at Sonic.
"M-maybe we're all tired and hungry," Sticks interjected trying to lighten the situation a bit. "We'd better discuss this after a binge at dinner and a good night's sleep, don't you think?".
"Sure...", said the hedgehog before getting up from the couch and quickly retreating from the office.
"Hm, what idiots you are...", Jet voiced before also retreating.
Amy slumped down on the couch, crestfallen, her hand on the Meta-quartz necklace she still had after so many years, stroking it as if looking for it give her comfort. Knuckles motioned for Sticks to go ahead while he stayed and chatted with Amy, and the badger obeyed.
"Is everything okay between you two?" the echidna took a seat next to the girl.
"Huh?", Amy seemed to have come out of a trance. "Ah! Of course! Of course..."
Knuckles' face gave away how unconvinced he was.
"Really, everything's fine. Better impossible, even," the hedgehog reaffirmed. "This hardly ever happens, it's just that the subject is... complicated."
"It wasn't unusual to see you two arguing seven years ago, but I never thought you'd disagree so strongly on anything."
"He and I... we have very different perspectives on Sally. I don't know where he got his, they come from before the chaos emeralds were destroyed, and the dunce doesn't want to talk things out, as is his wont. But I'm sure of mine. I know Sally..."
Then... 2 years before The Union.
The roar of the dying metal beast was deafening. The screeching of the iron clashing with itself, the infernal dance of the bolts breaking free and falling like suicides into the void. A thousand panes of glass shattering, cracking and turning to dust. Alarms in a futile cry that was heard by no one but the helpless pair of heroines desperately searching for a way to survive the impending catastrophe.
"Are you sure of your plan, Amy?" questioned Sally, who was leading the X-gear they both shared.
"One hundred percent!" lied the hedgehog with all her might.
Amy's true security could be calculated as no greater than 60%, being optimistic. And that is because all her hope rested on a vague memory, twisted by time. In her head there was only her mental image of Tails as a baby fox with thick horn-rimmed glasses, a white coat too big for him and a college cap repeating "Science, science! If you're in a colliding vehicle, the kinetic energy of the impact is absorbed by the structure of the vehicle, so the farther away you are from the point of impact, the greater your chances of survival, just like what happens in commercial airliners! Science!". In the back of her skull the girl had the feeling that the explanation was more detailed and had its nuances, but there was no time to reflect on it, the life of both depended on a very thin thread.
"I think the furthest point of this thing at the moment is on the bridge. Near it was where we found the second power source," Sally explained.
"Surely Eggman has a panic room for times like this. That would be- Look out!"
In their direction a large clump of metallic debris was hurtling, too big to dodge. Amy stepped ahead of Sally and summoned her Piko hammer to the maximum size she could afford, at least twice the usual size, and with it she delivered an accurate blow that deflected the projectile.
"Wow, fantastic!" celebrated Sally. "How are you so strong being so small?".
"I... I do CrossFit in the weekends…," the girl joked as she caught her breath. "Oh no..."
Their joy didn't last long, a hail of shrapnel was coming: ammunition, debris and glass of different sizes, but all potentially lethal.
"I don't think I can hit all that..."
"No, but I can cut it," Sally said as she materialized her two blades of smoking indigo light.
The hedgehog backed away and left the squirrel in front of the vehicle. When the shrapnel was close enough, a mask of light formed over Sally's face and she began to perform a dance, quick and graceful as lightning, severing into tiny pieces anything that fell near her blades until eventually it all turned to dust that the girls left behind.
"That was Awesome!" cheered Amy, "You were almost as fast as Sonic! How did you do that?".
"I did ballet when I was little, although I think I'm a little rusty."
"Really? I've always wanted to learn Ballet!".
"Maybe I'll teach you a few steps if we get out in one piece from here. I think I see the entrance to the bridge!"
With a couple of slashes from Sally and a final blow from Amy, the security door gave way and they were both able to enter. The place was in better shape than the rest of the ship, but not without the occasional wreck. Due to the inclination, it was impossible for them to walk on the floor, so they flew with the help of the X-Gear in search of any sign of Eggman's panic room. However, in the middle of the search, the Gear's energy ran out. Sally was able to jump before she fell, but Amy could not react as quickly. Sally was quick enough to grab her arm and help her up to safe ground.
"That's the third X-Gear I've lost this month. Nicole is going to kill me," Sally joked trying to hide her concern.
"Let's make sure it's her and not this. That panic room has to be somewhere nearby. Maybe..."
"Maybe..."
Both girls fixed their eyes on what appeared to be an airlock embedded in what was supposed to be the floor but from their perspective was the wall. Sally made a precise cut and Amy made a measured stroke to open it without breaking it and enter safely. The place was pitch black, but it was roomy enough for both of them and was also padded. The girls closed the lock and stood in the darkness awaiting the impact.
Don't think of a coffin Don't think of a coffin Don't think of a coffin Don't think of a coffin Don't think of a coffin Both said to themselves in their minds.
Immersed in the darkness of the soundproof room, the girls were unable to perceive anything but the racing of their hearts, their agitated breaths, the occasional brush of their hands and, from outside, the rumble of the ship's self-annihilation. As that rumble grew louder, ignoring the panic room's soundproofing, the two girls drew closer to each other. First they held hands, then arms lightly, then more tightly, and when the roar of warping metal became deafening, they embraced and closed their eyes, waiting for the worst to happen, and....
Then... 1 year and 11 months before The Union
Sally awoke suddenly, with a gasp, bathed in sweat and shivering as if she were in the middle of a glacial tundra. She struggled to catch her breath, sat up on the bed and tried to calm herself, grabbed one of the pillows around her and hugged it tightly while repeating in a whisper "It's all right, I'm home" over and over again.
When she could breathe normally she turned her gaze to the large window to her right. The blinds were closed, only a trickle of moonlight was filtering through them. She got out of bed still trembling a little. With weak legs she walked quickly to open the blinds so that a little more light could enter and help her fight claustrophobia. The broken moon was full, its glow and that of its remnants orbiting it slightly bluish. There was a time when a glimpse of it brought Sally immediate peace, but ever since it was shattered by the mad Dr. Eggman with the Eclipse Cannon, it only filled her with melancholy.
Sally opened the window and let the night breeze wash over her. She took a slow, deep breath. She felt much better. She sat on the window ledge for a while as she waited for the images of the nightmare to fade from her memory and disappear... at least for the night. Then she walked out of her room into the castle.
Acorn Castle was the greatest pride of not only the capital, but of the entire kingdom. The perfect amalgamation of luxury, power and security, the largest building in size and with an age that could be counted in hundreds.
Sally hated it.
Too big, too cold, too quiet and lonely. The rooms were so far apart from each other that they looked like islands in the sea. The huge, high vaulted ceilings resembled the palate of an impossibly giant beast that seemed to perpetually engulf the inhabitants of the castle. By day it may have had a certain luster, but at night it was terrifying and hostile. Sally wandered its dingy corridors as if she were a ghost. She felt like a ghost, an anima in pain doomed to wander in one place for eternity. She wanted to lighten her pace to reach her true destination faster, but to do so he had to take a shortcut through the place she despised the most: The Throne Chamber.
The largest in the castle, with the highest ceilings, the largest windows, with pillars that resembled Meta-sequoias for the diameter and height they possessed. Completely ornamented, adorned with gems, gold and Meta-quartz. All solely to protect the throne of the King, in the middle of it all, at the top of an elevated walkway that could be reached by climbing a hundred steps. And behind it, in the main stained glass window, the Crown Coat of Arms could be seen: a coat of arms in the shape of an acorn with the mythical sword of Acorn crossing it from above; with the motto of the crown at the base: "Vita, Veritas et Voluntas", "Life, truth and will", the three pillars on which the whole kingdom is built and the three guides of every monarch.
Passing through the throne room, the young squirrel looked in the direction of the piece of furniture. It was perhaps the most hideous thing Sally had ever seen in her entire life. Too big for anyone, asymmetrical, awkward looking and lacking the slightest sense of good taste. Composed entirely of shards of the Meta-Quartz once possessed by ancient kings and reserved only for members of the royal family, the Omega Meta-Quartz. All "dead" stones, as that type of Meta-Quartz tends to cease to function the moment its wearer passes away. "A chair made of corpses," Sally said to herself as at a hurried pace she retreated from the chamber.
By the time she realized it, Sally was already in the north wing of the castle, where her friends resided. She felt at peace. It was the newest part of the castle, built by her father for the cleaners, maids and butlers to sleep and be available 24/7. It was the most modest and demure area, with low ceilings and no ornamentation, most welcoming in Sally's eyes.
It was always her favorite place. As a little rascal she spent hours playing with the children of the workers and helping with chores, much to her father's chagrin. Her twin brother, Elias, was her guardian angel. He would distract their father to let the girl do what she wanted for as long as she wanted, and put up with the scolding of the bitter old king.
Sally took on the task of upgrading the wing so that it was also the base of operations for the Freedom Fighters. She gave each of her friends their own room and the power to tailor it to their tastes and needs.
Strolling through the wing, Sally looked at the doors of the rooms. She passed in front of Antoine's room and noticed that it was ajar; right next to it was Bunnie's, securely locked and with a denim tie hanging from the doorknob. Sally smiled mischievously, it was the sign that the hare and the coyote were together, and they didn't want any trouble. No one knew what the two lovebirds were doing alone, and no one asked, so Sally continued on her way.
Up ahead she came upon Rotor's room, difficult to mistake because of the huge door it possessed, necessary for the big walrus to enter. It was modified so that it opened and closed automatically only in his presence, with no exceptions. It was a necessary measure, since Rotor was the chief engineer of the kingdom, and his projects had to remain a complete secret to everyone, even royalty. Sally had blind trust in Rotor's abilities and nobility, so all was in order between them. The only other person with such a privilege of privacy was Nicole, the kingdom's telecommunications manager, whose room was further down the hall.
Sally hurried toward the lynx's quarters, skipping lightly as she went. When she arrived, she found the door closed but with light streaming underneath. As she approached, a camera scanner checked her. A small red bulb turned green and the door opened. The only ones with such automatic access were Nicole herself and Sally.
Inside, the place was dark except for the large OLED screen of the mega-computer in front of which the silhouette of the lynx was draw, engrossed in whatever she was doing and with headphones on at full volume, to the point that Sally could hear the rumble of music from where she stood.
Sally ran her hand along the wall next to the door until she found the switch and turned on the lights. Nicole nearly jumped out of her seat due to the fright, she looked around nervously until her gaze met Sally's.
"The nightmare again?" the Lynx asked as she stopped the music and removed her headphones.
"Again," replied the squirrel as she walked further into the room.
"Was it especially horrible this time? I notice you looking paler."
"No, I met a ghost coming this way."
"Oh, and what did it say to you?"
""Cut off Nicoles's internet so she can finally get into a steady sleep rhythm, uuuuuuuuh~"."
"If you do that, I'll set the castle on fire."
"I know, the very thought of seeing you without internet slaughtering everyone made my blood run cold. What's that?", Sally asked pointing to the half-eaten turkey sandwich on lynx's left hand side.
"My dinner. Do you want it?", Nicole held the sandwich out to the squirrel.
"No," Sally replied as she took a bite where Nicole had taken her last bite. She then grabbed the lynx's phone that sat on the desk and went to lay down on the bed next to it to watch videos on the web. "Seriously thot, you need to regulate your sleep rhythm better, Nikki."
"I'm a nocturnal animal, Sal," the tired lynx replied as she took a bite of the sandwich in the same spot where Sally had taken hers.
"Twilight, Nikki. Lynx are Twilight animal, not nocturnal."
"It's the same thing."
"There are several hours difference between twilight and three in the morning, Nikki."
"It's at this time that my neurons work best."
"Uh-huh, yeah. Sure. And I believe that."
"Believe whatever you want."
"That's what I always do."
Visiting Nicole always served to lift Sally's spirits above the clouds. She was the one person she could trust with her life with her eyes closed, her right hand and sometimes her left as well, her guardian angel, her partner. From the moment Sally took the first step into the room, she had already forgotten the nightmare, the whole world was just her and Nicole.
"It's already a month..." the lynx murmured.
"Yeah...," Sally replied tersely after a sigh. It was also typical of the lynx to be a bit of a killjoy.
"Lack of sleep is going to affect your health, if it isn't already."
"I just need a little distraction to catch up on sleep. You make it harder for me if you remind me, you know?."
"Sally...," Nicole stopped what she was doing and turned to look at Sal sternly. "I'm serious."
"I know! Ok? I know..."
"Bunnie told me about a sedative that might do the trick."
"Really? Having nightmares and not being able to wake up? Sounds fantastic."
"Okay, but we have to do something. You really worry me..."
Sally looked at the ceiling of the room as she passed the phone from one hand to the other, thoughtfully.
"...I wonder... I wonder if Amy is going through the same thing..."
"Why don't you ask her? I remember seeing her logged into her Faceshell."
"Really?"
"Yeah, for quite a while now.... And Tails too, for some reason." Nicole went back to her business again. "We were supposed to play League of Heroes."
"He plays that hellish game too?"
"It's like a drug, it takes who you least expect it, and it's really, REALLY hard to quit...", concluded the Lynx resignedly as she opened the League of Heroes Launcher.
Sally searched Nicole's phone for the Faceshell app. When Sally logged into her profile and checked the chat, she could notice the green dot above Amy's profile, indicating that she was online....
Immersed in the spectral light of the open refrigerator, the hedgehog scanned even the most hidden corner of the fridge in search of something crucial. Behind her was the doorway leading to the living room from which the light of the television emanated. After a few minutes of searching, the hedgehog was finally able to find the whipped cream. She took the bowl with the banana split from the counter and dipped it in cream. For a moment she hesitated whether to put the cream back in the fridge or take it with her, she decided for the later. She closed the fridge behind her with her foot and went into the living room with the bowl in one arm while she poured whipped cream directly into her mouth with the other.
In front of the television, on the coffee table, were scattered various knick-knacks. From the saltiest to the sweetest, some half-eaten bags and some completely empty.
When the hedgehog became anxious, she would eat. In the first days after being awakened by that horrendous nightmare of her near-death on that huge ship, she did her best to fight her anxiety and try to fall asleep. But after a month of the same, she had completely given in to hedonism. She could lose any weight she was going to gain with exercise whenever she wanted to.... or so she told herself.
The TV was playing the most boring movie on the face of the earth for her. It was her last-minute resort when she couldn't sleep by other means. But the film was already in the final part, when the Bat Guy was discovering that the Super Alien's mother had the same name as his, and Amy still couldn't fall asleep.
"The only... THE ONLY time you could be useful to me, and you still let me down! What a bad movie!" the girl said in exasperation as she took a bite of the banana split.
With the film playing in the background, Amy went to check her phone. She went into her Faceshell to look at some memes. She paused for a moment when she saw that Tails was also logged in.
"What is that kid doing up at this hour? I'm going to have to tell Sonic to scold him!"
The sound of a notification caught Amy's attention. Checking, she saw it was from Sally. It was the first time she had contacted her since they had met and exchanged profiles. The other days had been quite busy, with business to attend to at The Restoration and other chores. That week, however, the activities had subsided. The notification was for a voice chat, Amy accepted it excitedly.
"Girl! What are you doing up at this hour, don't you sleep?"
"Hey, that's my line!".
They both started laughing.
"Do you have nightmares about it too, Ames?"
"How could I not? It was the first time in a long time that I was in such danger and I didn't have Sonic to rescue me..."
"Same. I usually have Nicole and the Freedom Fighters to save me from my screw-ups."
"Which are more often than they should be," Nicole was heard saying in the distance.
"Oh, shut it!" shouted Sally jokingly at her.
"Is Nicole with you too?"
"Yes, she's doing very important business here, like telling an 8 year old boy to Git Gud."
"He's supposed to be a genius! Miles has no excuse for playing so badly!"
"She's talking about Tails, isn't she? Nicole Can you tell him to go to sleep already?" the hedgehog demanded.
"If he keeps invading my line and ruining the game, I'll send him to sleep myself."
"Go get him, Nicole! Show that 8 year old who's the boss!"
"Shut up!"
The girls laughed again.
For a long while Sally and Amy chatted about many banal things, catching up. Amy was already getting to the bottom of her Banana Split and Sally was inadvertently about to finish Nicole's dinner.
"Hey Ames, Why don't you stop by for a visit?" proposed Sal.
"Oh, that would be great...! But I don't know where you live."
"Don't worry, Nicole can give you the coordinates and an entry pass."
"Entry pass?"
"So our anti-aircraft defenses won't blow you to smithereens before you hit the ground," Nicole clarified.
"Oh... Okay, thanks, I guess..."
"How about tomorrow?"
"Don't you mean later today?"
"Ah, yes of course, hehe."
"Sounds great to me!"
"Did you hear Nicole?"
"Amy, Do you have how to come or would you rather we come get you?".
"I have a ride."
"Very well. I'll be sending you the coordinates and the pass to your personal number. If you get a message from Nexus, it's me."
""Nexus" Perfect!"
"See you then, Ames. Have a good rest, if you can."
"You too Sal! See ya!".
Amy disconnected from the voice chat, the bowl was completely empty, she was tired but happy, a huge smile was plastered on her face. She looked at the clock and the smile disappeared, dawn was just around the corner. She started biting her nails wondering if she should go to sleep or better stay awake waiting for Nicole's message. Then she got a message over Faceshell from Sally, "Make it afternoon, it's about to get light lol." The hedgehog sighed in relief and made her way to her room.
Maverick Lore bit: Acorn's Dream Castle.
"As the history books say, the original Architect of Acorn Castle, Eleazar Acorn the Third, built it based on the descriptions given by the scribes of what "The Dream Castle" of the legend of Adam Oak, the first of the Acorn lineage, looked like.
"The Dream Castle," the legend goes, was built by Adam as he dreamed of his ideal home while on the verge of death and helpless at the foot of the Acorn Family's lone Sacred Oak, under the shade of the first Meta-Sequoia trees and upon what was presumed to be the first Meta-quartz ore. It is said that Adam's power was such that he was able to channel the Meta-Quartz buried underground and materialize the entire castle by himself, down to the smallest detail. It was completely indistinguishable from a real castle and lasted for as long as Adam lived, between 80 and 100 years, disappearing the moment Adam took his last breath.
It is difficult to corroborate the veracity of the legend, which is more than two millennia old. The most studious assume it to be hyperbole or metaphor, the more dreamy take it as truth."
